DOHA: More than 10 tonnes of fresh fish from Qatari waters were offered for sale during a three-day Fish Festival which has concluded at Al Mazrouah Yard in Umm Salal.
The festival aimed at promoting local fish and was organised by the Fish Resources Department at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment.
The catch was offered at attractive prices ranging between QR7 to QR36 for popular varieties. Al Shaari was sold at QR7-QR8, Hamour QR20-QR30 and Al Kanad (kingfish) QR30-QR36), and up to 50 percent discounts were offered on some species.
Qatar’s annual fish production is between 12,000 and 14,000 tonnes which meets some 80 percent of local demand, and the remaining 20 percent demand is met through imports.
The peak fish production period is April-May. The festival was first of its kind and similar events are expected at other winter vegetable markets in Al Khor-Thakira and Al Wakrah.
