Doha, Qatar: Aligned with the global shift towards sustainability, Qatar has made it a central pillar of its National Vision 2030. Amid rapid development and the shift toward a knowledge-based economy, economic, environmental, and social sustainability have become pivotal to corporate strategies across the country.
Corporations and individuals are continually identifying more efficient and economical ways to operate, leveraging digital technologies to optimise resources, reduce waste, and advance positive climate action.
At Vodafone Qatar, digitisation and sustainability have been at the top of its priorities, serving as core components of how business is conducted. The telecom provider has been a driving force in Qatar’s digital transformation over the past 16 years, and continues to identify new ways to foster sustainable development through technology and innovation.
The facilities management department at Vodafone Qatar has been propelling its sustainability agenda, through efforts focused on digitisation, resource efficiency, and environmental responsibility. The department is relentless in integrating cutting-edge technology across various business operations in its two corporate offices in Msheireb and Lusail. As a result of these efforts, Vodafone Qatar’s Lusail headquarters has been awarded the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) ‘Design & Build’ 4-star rating for its interior fit-out by GORD. This recognition makes Vodafone Qatar the first telecom company in Qatar to receive this certification, highlighting its commitment to creating sustainable and efficient work environments.
The department inaugurated a state-of-the-art Building Management System (BMS) that integrates data and automation to continually monitor and control HQ systems. BMS serves as a data hub to configure, monitor, and control building systems in Vodafone Qatar’s Msheireb office, enhancing deployment speed and maximising uptime by ensuring that systems of all sizes are highly available and efficient. It oversees processes from planning and design to commissioning, operations, and maintenance.
Features include smart switches pre-programmed to match official office working hours, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) optimisation based on room occupancy, and energy-efficient Grade A LED lighting designed to reduce heat dissipation. Similarly, water consumption is optimised through reduced-flow aerators in bathrooms and ablution areas, leading to a 20% decrease in water usage.
Likewise, recycling initiatives are cornerstones of Vodafone Qatar’s facilities management sustainability efforts. The department actively seeks avenues to reuse and recycle resources to ensure a green, eco-friendly work environment across their corporate offices.
A comprehensive recycling initiative ensures responsible waste management, covering major waste streams like paper and organic materials across their corporate offices through certified recycling service providers.
Vodafone Qatar’s facilities management department also contracted certified recycling service providers for the proper management of waste generated by Vodafone’s facilities. This includes recycling of major waste streams such as paper and organic materials to ensure they are handled responsibly and diverted from landfills.
Additionally, these efforts extend to the facilities management department’s material sourcing, with office fit-outs utilising over 50% recycled material, as certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
Vodafone Qatar will continue to support Qatar’s 2030 vision of transforming the nation into an advanced society capable of achieving sustainable development.
Sustainable telco infrastructure will be an essential component of this vision, and Vodafone Qatar remains dedicated to leveraging technology and digitalisation to reduce waste, maximise efficiency, and ensure sustainability remains a core tenet of social, economic, and corporate development in Qatar.
