Doha: The US embassy hosted its National Day reception at the Sheraton Hotel last evening.
Ambassador Dana Shell Smith welcomed Guests of Honour Minister of Municipality and Environment H E Mohamed bin Abdullah Al Rumaihi, Minister of Public Health H E Dr Hanan Mohamed Al Kuwari, Ambassador Ibrahim Fahkroo and Ambassador Mahmoud, Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, and distinguished officials, fellow diplomats, business, cultural and education leaders who came in recognition of the strong US-Qatar relationship.
The reception was the final event in a week-long celebration of the ‘Discover America Week’. Smith highlighted deep partnerships and friendship between the two nations and recognised the diplomats, American and Qatari businesses, students and educators, and men and women in uniform who come together on a personal level every day to deepen ties between the US and Qatar. “Shared appreciation for and understanding of different cultures connects us in a way that allows us to better conduct all other conversations, whether on diplomacy, trade, or politics. It allows us to understand each other as human beings and on a personal level,” said Smith.
The event also celebrated the milestones of the bilateral relationship reached in recent years.
Last year, Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani had his first visit as Emir to the White House. He met again President Barack Obama at Camp David. US Secretary of State John Kerry visited Doha and First Lady Michelle Obama delivered the keynote address at the World Innovation Summit for Education. The US and Qatar inaugurated in Washington Economic and Investment Dialogue, and Washington officials hosted Qatari ministers and the CEO of Qatar Investment Authority to discuss ways to enhance the commercial relationship, which continues to expand and grow.
