DOHA: The Annual Research Conference 2016 (ARC’16) , the flagship event of Qatar Foundation Research and Development (QF R&D), begins today under the theme ‘Investing in Research and Innovating for Society.’
H H Sheikha Moza bint Nasser will inaugurate the conference, which will highlight the importance of strategic investment in research and innovation for the benefit of Qatar’s society and address the ‘Research Grand Challenges’.
The two-day ARC 16 at Qatar National Convention Centre will highlight national priorities and discuss how to tackle the four research grand challenges: Water security, energy security, cyber security and healthcare.
“The ARC this year is a big success in many ways. This year, we have more than 1,300 research abstracts, over 350 posters, 100 research technical presentations and 139 presenters. This ARC is becoming like magnet, when people know it’s happening on a particular day, then start to have satellite events. We have more than 10 events. In this way, the annual research conference is becoming like a research festival,” Dr Nabeel Al Salem, Executive Director, Outreach and Communications, QF R&D, told a press conference yesterday.
The winners of Qatar QF R&D’s Best Research Project Award and Best Innovation Award will be honoured for the first time at ARC 16. The award identifies an invention created by a Qatar entity partially or entirely supported by QF. Candidates for the award were selected from QF’s intellectual property portfolio. The winning invention was selected out of 280. Around 60 scientists will also be recognised for research work.
“We would like to encourage success stories and build the eco-system of research. The research is a chain of event and things built on each other, and things start at research, then go to implementing and then at the end have a product that is commercialised that people can actually use. We recognise the two ends of the chain — the beginning research and the end innovation,” said Dr Al Salem. The opening plenary will include a high-powered keynote discussion on ‘Strategic Investment in Research and Innovation for Society’. Parallel discussions will follow, investigating key topics in energy and environment; computing and information technology; healthcare; social sciences, arts and humanities; and innovation.
ARC’16 will showcase important local and international collaborations.
Tomorrow, the conference will include the announcement of successful grant applicants under QNRF’s flagship National Priorities Research Programme and the eight Undergraduate Research Experience Programme competition, through which students gain research and development experience under the guidance of faculty members. The Peninsula
