Vazhakkad Association Qatar (VAQ), observed Chaliyar Day on January 11 at Skills Development Centre.
The annual remembrance day is a tribute to K.A. Rahman, who was the pioneer in leading the protest for years against the continuous stream of air and water pollution caused by the Pulp and Staple Fibre Division of the Gwalior Rayon Silk Manufacturing Company Limited (Grasim) located in Mavoor in the southern Indian state of Kerala in 1990s.
P K Niaz, senior journalist from The Peninsula, delivered the remembrance speech. The function was chaired by VAQ President Sidheek Vattappara. Qatar Indian Football Forum (QIFF) President K Mohammed Eisa inaugurated the gathering.
Rajesh Menon of MNK Group, Indian Sports Centre (ISC) President Nilangshu Dey and Abdul Aziz Vallil (QFA) also spoke. VAQ Secretary Akbar T P welcomed the gathering and Shamvil delivered a vote of thanks
The general body elected new office-bearers for the year 2019. Suhail Konnakot (President), ShajahanT K (General Secretary) and Favas B K (Treasurer).
