Doha: Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) has trained a group of imams — clerics who lead Islamic prayers and deliver Friday sermons — to raise awareness among faithful about conservation of electricity and water.
Kahramaa wants to use all possible means to create awareness about rationalisation of electricity and water, said a release.
Mosques can play a crucial role in conveying this message to the public through Friday sermons that address citizens and expatriates.
A contest will be held to select the best imam based on their performance in this regard.
This was disclosed in a workshop for imams, organised by Kahramaa in collaboration with the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs and Arshidni Center at Tarsheed Park in Al Thumama.
Kahramaa has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the ministry to support the Tarsheed programme that aims to reduce consumption of water by 35 percent and electricity by 20 percent by 2017.
The five-year programme initiated as a national campaign for efficient use of water and electricity was launched in 2012.
In a short span of time since its launch, Tarsheed has won many awards for its achievements.
Tarsheed, through its multi- facet strategies and programmes, aims to reach all segments of society to raise awareness about conservation of the precious resources.
Kahramaa has also joined hands with organisations, including schools, for successful implementation of the programme across the country.
It has also signed MoUs with organisations to implement its objectives and promote a culture of conservation among the public.
Kahramaa has urged all people to take an active role in the programme and abide by the law on conservation of water and electricity.
