DOHA: Sheikh Hamad bin Thamer Al Thani, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Aljazeera Media Network, has said that hosting the 65th edition of the conference of the International Press Institute (IPI) here reflects “our deep belief in the importance of developing close and strategic ties and partnership with global organisations concerned with the protection of journalists and their rights, media freedom and media institutions”.
IPI is a global network of journalists, editors and media executives from nearly 100 countries from across the world and is headquartered in Vienna, Austria, having been founded in late 1950.
Its mission is to defend media freedom, and free flow of news wherever they are threatened, said Sheikh Hamad bin Thamer.
He said the conference will highlight major challenges facing journalists, especially in areas of conflict and internally destabilised countries while they are trying to tell the people what’s happening on the ground, including exposing corruption and violation of human rights.
Sheikh Hamad bin Thamer said there is a possibility that the conference would back a resolution mulling initiatives to be taken at the global level to ensure the safety of journalists and bring criminals to justice and ensure compensation for the victims.
Aljazeera Network is happy to be hosting this event in which 300 most prominent journalists and leading media organisations from around the world are taking part, Sheikh Hamad bin Thamer added.
