Shura Council and Turkish Grand National Assembly sign MoU to enhance cooperation

Doha: The Shura Council and the Turkish Grand National Assembly yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to increase parliamentary cooperation between the two countries.

Speaker of the Shura Council H E Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanem met yesterday with Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of the Republic of Turkey H E Mustafa Sentop, who is visiting the country.

During the meeting, they reviewed the existing bilateral relations between the two brotherly countries in the parliamentary field and ways of enhancing and developing them, in addition to discussing several issues related to parliamentary affairs.

Following the meeting, the Shura Council and the Turkish Grand National Assembly signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to increase parliamentary cooperation between the two countries.

Speaker of the Shura Council Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanem and Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly Mustafa Sentop signed the MoU.

On this occasion, the Speaker of the Shura Council stressed that the MoU will contribute to strengthening the existing parliamentary relations between the two brotherly countries, deepening cooperation relations and taking them to broader horizons, and coordinating common positions in international forums. 

His Excellency indicated that the signing of the MoU reflects the depth of relations between the two countries in various fields.

The MoU signed yesterday aims to coordinate efforts, positions, and visions in international parliamentary forums on issues of common interest. 

Also, it will work to strengthen parliamentary communication channels between the two parties, exchange parliamentary knowledge and experiences in the legislative, supervisory, and administrative fields, and deepen understanding and coordination on joint initiatives to submit them in regional and international parliamentary unions to support common issues in the interest of the two brotherly countries.

Deputy Speaker of the Shura Council H E Dr. Hamda bint Hassan Al Sulaiti several members of the Council, and Ambassador of Turkey to the State of Qatar H E Dr. Mustafa Goksu attended the meeting and the MoU signing.

Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of the Republic of Turkey, H E Mustafa Sentop, has said that the signing of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Qatar’s Shura Council and Turkey’s Grand National Assembly will help enhance parliamentary cooperation between the two countries.

Addressing a press conference yesterday, he said that Turkey and Qatar enjoy very strong relations covering wide-ranging aspects from politics to economy. “From political to economic sides, we have very great relations which cover wide-ranging issues. They are not only limited to bilateral ties but also cover cooperation on many multilateral and international issues.”

He said that both the countries have existing mechanism of cooperation between the parliaments. “We also have parliamentary friendship group. We have strong will to develop relations further. These relations are not only important for the two countries but for the whole region.”

Mustafa Sentop said that peoples of both the countries enjoy close ties which have historical roots and are based on many similarities. “In difficult times, we stood with Qatar and Qatar always stood with Turkey in its difficult time. You can see the examples of failed coup attempt in Turkey and the Gulf crisis.”

He said that his visit to Qatar is important “as I am the first speaker of any country who visited Qatar after Shura elections.” He further said that October 2, 2021 Shura elections in Qatar was an important step towards democracy.

He said that now people would participate in decision making process “I convey congratulations to elected members and wish them success in performing their duties.”

He also congratulated Qatar’s leadership for holding successful elections for the first time without any problems.

“Qatar held in a successful manner the whole election process though it was for the first time. It happened due to strong will of H H the Amir.”

Talking on the MoU, he said that it will enhance cooperation between the two parliaments. “It covers technical cooperation as well as sharing knowledge and experiences on legislation processes. Now lawmakers and officials from both the countries can exchange parliamentary visits.” 

He also expressed his pleasure over resolution of Gulf crisis saying, “Turkey always supported good relations between the Gulf countries. Problems among GCC states can affect the whole region.  Turkey always supports resolution of issue through peaceful means.”

The Speaker of Grand National Assembly of Turkey also lauded Qatar’s preparations for hosting 2022 FIFA World Cup. “Many Turkish companies also took part in infrastructure developments works and it was a Turkish company which constructed Al Thumama Stadium.” He said that Turkey was also ready to lend any kind of help to Qatar in hosting 2022 FIFA World Cup. “Whenever Qatar needs our help we will be there.”

 He said that Turkey and Qatar shared same vision on many regional, international issues therefore were enjoying close coordination at different global forums.
