DOHA: The Indonesian community in Qatar gathered at the Indonesian Chancery on Friday to mark the country’s 73 years of independence.

The ceremony, which was presided by Meity Suahriah, Minister Counsellor, witnessed the presence of Zaenur Rofid, Charge d’Affaires, other embassy officials and members of the Indonesian community and included a flag saluting ceremony led by Yusup Ramlan, Attache.

Seventy-three years since the proclamation of Indonesia’s independence on August 17, 1945, the country has largely enjoyed steady and robust economic growth. For this, the community offered prayer and thanks to God for the level of progress and development the country has achieved through the years.

Ambassador Muhammad Basri Sidehabi relayed a message of unity and perseverance to around 43,000 Indonesians in Qatar who are engaged in various sectors. Basri urged his compatriots to always strive for excellence wherever they are and in whatever capacity and to contribute to the community both in Indonesia and in Qatar.

During the ceremony, the community offered a prayer for the successful hosting of Asian Games 2018 which opened yesterday and runs until September 2 in Jakarta and Palembang. The community also observed a moment of silence as a sign of support for the people affected by natural disasters in Indonesia and throughout the world.

For this year’s Independence Day celebration, the Indonesian Embassy has collaborated with the Qatar chapter of the Indonesian National Nurse Association (INNA-Q) to hold health and lifestyle discussion, conduct free medical check-up and provide beauty and skincare advice to the participants.

The Embassy launched a series of sports events to celebrate Independence Day. They included various sports such as table tennis, badminton, bowling, and traditional games which were opened to Indonesian citizens including children and adults, men and women and run until at the end of summer session.
