Aiming to encourage small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) and entrepreneurs, here, to develop their businesses and play a prominent role in the national economy, the Qatar Development Bank (QDB) launched the first Qatar Entrepreneurship Award 2017 (Rowad), yesterday. The award, under the patronage of the Emir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, is completion of QDB’s strategy to create an entrepreneur ecosystem in Qatar.
“Rowad will propel entrepreneurs to compete and offer their best innovations, projects and initiatives to enrich the business community with new and innovative projects that serve the Qatari community,” said Abdulaziz bin Nasser Al Khalifa, CEO.
“The award has set forth a number of parameters which will help raise the standards of the local companies here and push their growth. The award is expected to inspire SMEs to improve their productions to elevate their rankings here. Hence, Rowad is an opportunity for enterprises here to double their efforts to improve themselves and play a leading role in Qatari economy,” he added
“Our role in QDB is to support and build an ideal entrepreneur ecosystem system here. Through this award, we are perking up to create an ideal and world class entrepreneur system in Qatar. Various entrepreneur networks and monitors have ranked Qatar among the top in terms of entrepreneurship friendliness and support,” Al Khalifa told The Peninsula.
The application process for the award is opened to eligible organisations in Qatar. The first Qatar Entrepreneurship Award comprises of five categories namely, the Best Microenterprise Award, the Best Scale-up Business Award, the Best Start-up Business Award, the Best Exporter Award and the Best Local Market Self-sufficiency Award.  Following the receipt of applications, a thorough verification and review will be conducted. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by the QDB team to allow for a further winnowing of suitable candidates.
A specially-comprised panel of judges will then conduct their final review and select the winners, who will be announced during a grand ceremony, scheduled to held on 15 November 2017.
