DOHA: Peace in the Middle East cannot be achieved without raising the issue of human rights and implementing it, Attorney General H E Dr Ali bin Fetais Al Marri said yesterday.
He was addressing a scientific forum on ‘Human rights and private law: Unity in diversity” which opened yesterday at Qatar University (QU).
Dr Al Marri said: “It is regrettable that the issue of human rights is quite absent in the Middle East. We should look at the European experience of the First and Second world wars. We see now that hundreds of conflicts and disasters are happening in our region. The concept of human rights will ensure that we do not experience a third world war.
“We need to understand that we cannot exclude others because of their religion or ethnicity… I believe that the European experience can teach us many lessons in terms of human rights and I hope that we do not pay the high price Europe has paid in maintaining its independence and peace. Peace in the Middle East cannot be achieved without raising the issue of human rights and implementing it. Our diversity is our power that can help us overcome all conflicts in the region,” he added. The two-day forum is organised by the French Legal Culture Club at College of Law (LAWC) in collaboration with the French embassy, the Legal Research Institute at the University of Paris 13 Sorbonne Paris and the Laboratory of Law and Freedoms at the University of East-Paris Créteil.
French Ambassador Eric Chevalier, college Dean Dr Mohammed Al Khulaifi were present along with QU leaders, law faculty and students.
The forum aims to highlight the link between human rights and private law and its branches — civil law, family law, commercial law, labour law and the civil and commercial codes.
Chevalier said, “The proximity of our legal cultures and the richness of our exchanges are a symbol of the unique relationship that exists between our two countries. I have no doubt that our legal relationship will be similar to the Doha Corniche: Long, open, beautiful and full of heart.”
Chevallier and Dr Al Khulaifi honoured students who completed the French Legal Terminology Training. The Peninsula
