DOHA: A panel of international media experts tackled the upcoming US presidential election in a debate at Grand Hyatt Doha yesterday.
The ‘Presidential Predictions Forum: Media, Politics and Campaign 2016’ was hosted by the American Chamber of Commerce in Qatar (AmCham Qatar) as a special edition of its Distinguished Speaker Series and was part of the second annual Discover America Week-Qatar 2016.
The panel was moderated by Northwestern University-Qatar Dean and CEO Everette E Dennis and comprised Clyde Wilcox, Professor of Political Science, Georgetown School of Foreign Service in Qatar; Jocelyn Mitchell, Assistant Professor of Liberal Artsm, NU-Q; Yasir Khan, Al Jazeera English producer and documentary filmmaker.
“AmCham is following developments in the US election cycle, one of the most passionate and hardest to call in recent history. We are here to support American businesses in Qatar and those interested in doing business in the US and having the latest, most accurate intelligence from the campaign trail and its potential impact on businesses in the US and Qatar is the sort of insight our members look to us to supply,” said AmCham Qatar Chairman Robert A Hager.
The discussion offered a thoughtful perspective on what to expect from the race. The panellists reviewed media coverage of the campaign and the underlying meanings behind the rhetoric and shared insights on how to gauge outcomes of the election cycle and its impact on relations between the US and the rest of the world.
“We wanted to bring some of the spirit of political debate to the event and we succeeded. The intent was to help our attendees break through some of the noise surrounding the debate and find out what’s behind the headlines.
“It’s important to be able to determine what can make a difference for American citizens, those living abroad, and our relations with international partners. I commend AmCham for hosting the engaging event,” said Dennis.
Discover America Week-Qatar 2016 is an annual series of events celebrating the US-Qatar partnership and a joint effort between the US embassy and AmCham Qatar. The Peninsula
