DOHA: The Central Municipal Council (CMC) yesterday recommended that the authorities concerned must take responsibility for contracts citizens sign for construction of their homes to protect them from being cheated.
CMC Chairman Mohammed Mahmoud Al Shafi yesterday presented the proposal at the regular weekly session of the council.
Qataris receive QR1.2m each as loan to build homes, but when they sign contracts with consultants and contractors, many are cheated due to lack of experience, said Al Shafi, who represents constituency No. 14.
To address the issue the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs, in collaboration with Qatar Development Bank, need to take responsibility for signing construction contracts and supervise the construction process to protect citizens’ rights, he stressed.
The ministry needs to restore the housing system of 2007, when citizens received homes after completion of construction.
Due to failure of contractors and engineering and mistakes by contractors, citizens are suing contractors and consultants but cases are taking a long time in courts.
This causes delay in construction and citizens end up spending more due to a rise in the prices of construction materials, said Al Shafi.
The Services and Facilities Committee of the CMC also recommended that all bridges, subways and upcoming projects should be painted and decorated with art works to reflect Qatari heritage and culture, said the council.
Entities such as Centre for Cultural Innovation and Qatar Fine Arts Association should be given a chance to take part in decoration of roads, bridges and subways.
The proposal was originally presented by Councillor Fatima bint Ahmed Al Kawari who represents constituency No, 9.
All existing and future bridges need to be beautified with art touches, Al Kawari said.
The proposal was discussed last December and forwarded to the committee.
Trucks and trailers should not be allowed to park along the road leading to Muaither from the bridges in the Industrial area, said councillors Mohammed bin Ali Al Azba and Mohammed bin Hamad Al Attan. The Peninsula
The movement of trucks in Al Murra, Al Sharqiyah near the zoo and near Muaither Sport Club should also be restricted as they pose a danger to other motorists, they noted.
