GEM concludes in Paris with participation of Qatar

Paris: The Global Education Meeting (GEM), which was inaugurated by French President Emmanuel Macron, concluded in Paris on Saturday with the participation of the State of Qatar and in the presence of several leaders of the participating countries.

Minister of Education and Higher Education H E Buthaina bint Ali Al Jabr Al Nuaimi headed the delegation of the State of Qatar participating in the meeting.
In her speech to the meeting, Minister of Education and Higher Education reviewed the most prominent achievements of the state in the field of education, stressing that Qatar has made remarkable progress in accelerating Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 4 by formulating the second strategy for education and training sector (2018-22) and the plan of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education in line with the SDG 4, the new general framework for education for the remaining ten years of the 2030 Sustainable Development Plan.

During the speech, the minister indicated that in the field of policy advancement, the general framework of the curricula has been developed, so that sustainable development has become one of the essential elements in it, including the development of evaluation policies, registration, admission, and curricula standards.

In the field of learning environments, she referred to the development of the school environment to be safe, inclusive, and healthy, as well as the strengthening of curricular and extra-curricular educational programmes in the field of awareness and education of the SDGs in various areas of life.

Regarding capacity-building for teachers, she referred to the programmes and training courses for teachers, professional licenses,  and scientific subjects and their connection to contemporary issues and development goals. About 6,000 teachers have benefited from 71 training programmes in the last academic year, she pointed out. 

Concerning youth empowerment, the minister pointed to the establishment of a youth forum that deals with some important issues of interest to youth groups while organising some scientific, economic, and social programmes to develop the capabilities of youth and students in these areas.

In the area of accelerating procedures at the national level, the state has taken several measures to enhance environmental protection community programmes to increase green spaces, preserve plant and animal wildlife, recycle waste, and work to enhance and preserve environment, she explained.

The minister affirmed that the wise leadership of Qatar firmly believes that education for sustainable development is education for a bright future, for everyone at every time and place, for a successful transition towards societies in which the spirit of tolerance and peace prevails, and the spirit of national identity and global human citizenship is strengthened in their hearts.

GEM focused on stimulating global political commitments to further highlight the importance of education, stressing the need for investments in educational sectors as a key driver for recovering from the COVID-19 effects and accelerating the 2030 SDGs for a better future of education.
