Doha: The State of Qatar won the membership of UNESCO Executive Board for the next four years.
The voting on the membership took place in a public hearing held during the 38th General Conference of UNESCO which currently underway in Paris.
Among eight Arab countries applied for the position, four Arab countries, in addition to Qatar, won the membership namely Sultanate of Oman, Lebanon and Republic of Sudan
In a statement to Qatar News Agency (QNA), Secretary General of Qatar National Committee for Education, Culture and Science, Dr. Hamda Hassan Al-Sulaiti said that the membership came after continued efforts that lasted for several months by some Qatar ministers, institutions and office of UNESCO special envoy for basic and higher education HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser,
Dr. Hamda Al-Sulaiti lauded the role of the Foreign Ministry, the Minister of Education and Higher Education and the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage which implemented a series of events that highlighted the modern renaissance of the State of Qatar.
She also referred to efforts of Qatar National Committee for Education, Culture and Science which led Qatar's winning of a majority of 121 votes out of 193.
Dr. Hamda Al-Sulaiti underlined that this step contributes to deepening relations between Qatar and UNESCO other member states.
The Executive Board of UNESCO comprises 50 states elected by the general conference. It prepares the agenda of the sessions that held by general conference and discusses the organization's program and budget estimates which is submitted by the director general to the general conference along with his appropriate recommendations. The executive board also elects UNESCO Director-General.
