JERUSALEM: Israeli police on Friday shot and wounded -- and later arrested -- a Palestinian man who allegedly stabbed a woman on Jerusalem’s light-rail system, according to an Israeli police statement.
"A woman in her early 20s is in critical condition after being stabbed near the New Gate of Jerusalem’s Old City," read the statement, which was issued shortly after the alleged attack.
Israel’s Walla news website, however, has since reported that the stabbing victim had succumbed to her injuries.
According to the initial police statement, the alleged attacker was shot and injured by police at the scene before being taken into custody.
In a subsequent statement, police identified the alleged attacker as a 57-year-old Palestinian resident of Jerusalem and the victim as a British tourist.
Since October of 2015, more than 270 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli police either during -- or after -- alleged attacks on Israelis or in clashes with Israeli security forces, according to official Palestinian figures.
The Israeli authorities, for their part, say at least 48 Israelis have been killed in attacks by Palestinians over the same period.
