Geneva: Qatar reiterated its commitment to continue cooperating with relevant UN counter-terrorism agencies and its condemnation of all acts of terrorism, regardless of their motives, justifications, and place.
This came during the statement of the State of Qatar delivered by First Secretary at the Human Rights Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Abdullah Mahdi Al Yami, during the interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms while countering terrorism within the framework of 52nd session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva.
Al Yami affirmed that the phenomena of terrorism and violent extremism pose an utmost threat to international peace and security, human rights, and achieving the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
He stressed that policies and measures to counter and combat the two phenomena should not lead to undermining human rights and the rule of law. He said Qatar continues to update its counter-terrorism legislations and policies, the last of which was law No. 20 for 2019 on Anti-Money Laundering and Combating the Financing of Terrorism law in line with international standards and in pace with developments concerned with harnessing modern technology to eliminate terrorism and extremism.
He considered Qatar’s hosting of UNOCT International Hub on Behavioral Insights to Counter Terrorism and UNOCT Program Office on Parliamentary Engagement in Preventing and Countering Terrorism as leading projects within the strategic partnership between the State of Qatar and the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT).
