DOHA: As the Arab world marks Arab Towns Organization Day today, Qatar has said it remains committed to improving its municipal services, utilities and infrastructure to ensure prosperity, peace and stability for people in the country.
The Arab Towns Organization was founded on March 15 in 1967 and is headquartered in Kuwait.
It gives away Arab Towns Organization Award, whose Foundation is based in Doha.
The Organization aims at maintaining the identity of Arab city and empowerment of Arab local authorities and promoting decentralisation.
Its objective is to also raise the levels of municipal services and localities in Arab cities.
March 15 is marked in the Arab world as the foundation day of the Arab Towns Organization.
On this occasion, Qatar’s Minister of Municipality and Environment, H E Mohamed bin Abdullah Al Rumaihi has issued a statement, reports Qatar News Agency QNA.
He said the slogan of this year’s Arab Towns Organization Day is “No Sustainable Development is possible Amidst Constant Bloodshed, Migration and Sheltering of Refugees”.
This slogan has been chosen so that the issue of sustainable development could be raised in the Arab world.
Without sustainable development ensuring peace and prosperity and a stable environment for the people is not possible.
March 15 is being marked this year amidst grave threats and challenges being faced by several Arab cities. “What is required to fight these threats and challenges and to remove them from our midst is our coordinated effort,” emphasized Al Rumaihi. Sustainable development is the only way to keep the Arab people away from conflict and war and ensure an environment of peace and prosperity for them, he said.
Talking about Qatar, he said the country has taken and is still taking key steps to provide quality municipal services and utilities to the people.
The Minister said that a hallmark of Qatar’s ongoing development is good urban planning and continuous infrastructure development.
So many important development projects have been completed and many are still going on. The improved services, civic amenities and development reflect in all-round development, which means development at all levels—social, economic, human and environmental, said Al Rumaihi.
This is the lofty vision of Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, said the Minister.
He said achieving overall development is linked to ensuring future prosperity and social stability for Qatar’s citizens and expatriates.
And that is why these objectives are enshrined as the lofty goals of the Qatar National Vision 2030.
The QNV 2030 is the road map of Qatar’s future and sustainable development.
His Ministry, said Al Rumaihi, is keen to improve its services. He, however, underlined the need for the people to resolve on this Day to help conserve the utilities and environment.
