DOHA: Qatar has made history as the first country in the Middle East region to host the 89th UCI Road World Championship. The US Ambassador to Qatar, Dana Shell Smith, said that this cycling event made clear that “Qatar has established itself as a major stop in the global sporting arena,” adding “this is a source of pride for Qatar, the region, and its friends — especially the US.”
At yesterday’s reception for the American cyclists and their supporters, Smith hailed the involvement of American cyclists in Qatar as a clear symbol of strong bilateral relations. “Your participation here provides another layer of meaningful depth to the already deep and broad US-Qatari relationship,” she said. She went on to congratulate several American cyclists for their wins during the first days of the World Championship.
