Doha: A team of PhD students from the College of Science and Engineering (CSE) and the College of Islamic Studies (CIS) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) won first place at CodeCamp, a hackathon organized by the Digital Incubation Center, under the patronage of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.

As part of the contest, hackathon participants were challenged to develop smart solutions that solve enterprise challenges. The HBKU winning team presented a predictive machine learning-based solution to solve patient re-admission prediction for Hamad Hospital. The solution is capable of handling live data, such as previous health data and records, to identify with high accuracy patients who may be re-admitted in the next few days.

Their innovative solution leverages machine learning to address the challenge of identifying patients returning to Hamad Hospital within 30 days of their discharge, which otherwise adds to the burden of medical insurance and allocation of beds.

The winning team members were CSE PhD students Ashhadul Islam, Mohamed Rafiul Biswas, and Uzair Shah from the Division of Information and Computing Technology; Mohamed Rakibul Hasan, Division of Engineering Management and Decision Sciences; and Muhammad Fazlurrahman Syarif, PhD student in Islamic Finance and Economy at CIS.

The team won an offer from the Digital Incubation Center and a chance to commercialize the solution in partnership with Hamad Hospital.
