Doha: The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change represented by the Department of Radiation and Chemicals Protection will enhance cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), with the aim of supporting Qatar in four national projects during 2022-23.
These projects will cover each of the areas of food safety, which will be implemented with the Ministry of Public Health, strengthening national capabilities in radiological diagnosis of diseases and will be implemented with Hamad Medical Corporation and Sidra Medicine, said the Ministry in a statement.
This aims at strengthening the supervisory work on radiological applications in the medical, industrial and environmental fields and is implemented by the Department of Prevention from Radiation and Chemicals at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.
It will also help establish a laboratory for radioactive devices, the largest of its kind in the Middle East, to improve radiation protection programmes in Qatar. The Laboratory will be implemented by the Department of Radiation and Chemicals Protection at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.
Qatar has 35 technical cooperation projects with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) currently, including 10 national projects, 23 regional projects and two projects at the global level. These projects will be implemented by more than 10 different institutions and destinations in Qatar, according to their jurisdiction.
The Department of Radiation Protection and Chemicals at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change will follow up on these projects with the various authorities and institutions within the State of Qatar that implement these projects.
The office also acts as a link between the implementing agencies of these projects and IAEA to benefit from these projects and their outputs and to ensure that they are in line with Qatar Vision 2030.
These projects cover the areas of agriculture and production improvement with 4 projects, two project for improving animal production and fighting against diseases, 9 projects for medicine and human health, 5 projects for strengthening control over radiological activities and environmental radiological survey, one project for combating the effects of climate change, one project for developing human capabilities in the field of peaceful uses of atomic energy, environmental survey of the seas and plastic pollution, 3 projects for food safety and one project each for ground water and heritage.
These projects provide training for workers in various fields, including short and long-term training. These projects also provide devices and equipment as per the need.
