DOHA: The National Diabetes Centre at Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Hamad General Hospital, in collaboration with the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, held a diabetes awareness workshop for imams at mosques.
This was the second such workshop conducted by HMC to raise awareness about chronic diseases by teaching imams about diabetes prevention and providing them with tips and themes to develop their Friday sermons.
“The workshop focused on raising awareness about diabetes through imams, who are encouraged to use Friday sermons and Islamic lectures to educate people on the importance of a healthy diet and physical exercise for diabetes prevention and treatment,” said Professor Abdul-Badi Abou-Samra, Chairman, Internal Medicine, HMC.
He said imams will use the knowledge gained during the workshop to inform the public about the healthy lifestyle led by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his companions.
He said the Holy Prophet’s life serves as a great example of a healthy lifestyle that incorporated regular physical exercise and a healthy diet.
The workshop featured presentations on diabetes, its causes and risk factors and encouraged imams to learn about dangers of a sedentary lifestyle, lack of physical exercise and unhealthy eating habits.
Diabetes prevention tips, such as incorporating healthy food into one’s diet and increasing physical activity, were also highlighted.
Several imams joined the platform and highlighted the healthy lifestyle led by the Prophet and his companions.
