DOHA: Qatar Railways Company (Qatar Rail) has announced that the Lusail QNB Metro Station has set a new record for the total number of passengers received in one day at a single station on the Doha Metro.
In a tweet on Saturday, Qatar Rail said over 97,000 passengers, the highest so far in the history of the metro, were received at the station on Friday, the day of the Lusail Super Cup match between Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal and Zamalek of Egypt.
Al Hilal won the match after beating Egypt’s Zamalek 4-1 in a penalty shootout as Qatar showed its readiness to host the FIFA World Cup by staging a blockbuster at the Lusail Stadium.
Launched in 2019, Qatar Rail reached a significant milestone of 50 million ridership in March this year. The highest number of passengers recorded by the Doha Metro was on National Day in the year 2019, when the number of passengers reached 330,000.
Since its launch, Doha Metro has continued to witness a large public turnout by the residents and visitors of Qatar. The metro has also played an important role in the success of organizing major events and hosting various events, especially sports ones.
During the last Eid Al Fitr break from 2nd to 5th May, approximately 735,000, including 540,000 passengers during the temporary Corniche closure from 3rd to 5th May, used its services.
During this period, the total metro ridership was recorded at 705,000, while Lusail Tram transported 30,000 passengers. The public used the metro and tram services to get to malls, parks, and other leisure destinations covered by the networks.
As a result of using Doha Metro during that period, there were 150,000 fewer cars on Doha's roads, resulting in a 200 ton reduction in CO2 emissions.
The Doha Metro has 37 stations spread across three lines, including the Red Line, Gold Line, and Green Line. Retail space of approximately 9,200 m2 is spread across 213 retail outlets.
Lusail Trams has 25 stations spread across four lines. The total route length is approximately 19 km. Retail space of approximately 1,500 m2 is spread across 43 retail outlets.
