Doha: Qatar University (QU) President Dr Hassan Rashid Al Derham, staff, faculty, students and their families took part in the annual National Sports Day celebrations across the country yesterday.
Through its Sports and Recreation Section in the Student Activities Department, QU conducted sporting and fitness events on its campus and at Katara.
Activities under the theme ‘Sports Bring Us Together’ aimed to promote sports and healthy lifestyles throughout the community.
The events were organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Municipality and Environment, Community College of Qatar and Katara, the official host.
At QU Sports Hall, QU female students participated in sport-related and recreational activities such as yoga, Zumba, strength and conditioning, and bubble ball games.
At Katara, the QU programme included a march competition for kids (1km) and adults (2.5km), a skydiving show performed by a QU team, and maritime activities such as volleyball and football.
An exhibition on the sidelines featured two booths which provided visitors with information on sportive and healthy lifestyles, fitness and nutrition.
The activities were part of QU’s contribution to highlighting health benefits of sports and fitness in line with the National Health Strategy and Qatar National Vision 2030, said Abdulla Al Yafei, Associate Vice-President, Student Life and Services, QU.
“QU is demonstrating the importance of exercise for building a healthy community engaging people from all walks of life and age groups. We are proud to be part of the national event and to share the Emir’s vision of a healthy nation.”
Asmaa Al Naemi, Head, Sports and Recreation Section, QU, said: “The event highlights QU’s commitment to strengthen strong links with society and engage the community in the importance of following a healthy lifestyle through sports.
