Berlin: Sometimes a computer may not recognize a USB device such as a memory stick or hard drive, but with a few clicks this common frustration can usually be rectified, our computer experts say.

On a Windows computer, click on "Disk Management" under the Control Panel. This reveals all the drives and partitions on the computer.

If the device is not defective, it should be listed here.

If the drive still can’t be accessed, it might need to have a drive letter assigned. To do this, right-click on the drive and select "Change drive letter and paths." After clicking "Add," an unassigned drive letter will be selected and given to the device.

Stubborn thumbdrives should then become accessible.
