Doha: Qatar called yesterday for collective action and global solidarity to face development challenges, protect human community from the surrounding dangers, achieve social justice and guarantee human dignity, regardless of any individual considerations or interests.

This came in a speech delivered by Minister of Social Development and Family H E Mariam bint Ali bin Nasser Al Misned, at the high-level discussions of the ministerial forum of the 61st session of the United Nations Committee for Social Development (CSocD61), currently being held at the UN’s headquarters in New York.

Qatar looks forward to collaborating with other international parties to protect the local and international human community from the surrounding hazards and challenges, urging the peoples of the world to follow this vision, in a bid to stop the social deterioration and other heavy repercussions emanating from COVID-19 pandemic, the Minister said.

Qatar’s message to the world lies in the call for solidarity and cooperation, so that all societies have equal opportunities for development, progress and advancement, she said. It is necessary to seek joint efforts and to work collectively to produce positive results  of a common nature, given the global interdependence that gives development and world hazards an international nature, Al Misned added.

The Minister of Social Development and Family stressed the importance of international action in order to achieve social justice and ensure human dignity for all peoples and societies, regardless of any considerations or individual interest.

She also stressed the importance of the global struggle to create productive workforce on the one hand and to provide decent work for all on the other hand, without discrimination or segregation on race, colour or religion. In this regard, the Minister highlighted a set of Qatari initiatives aimed at creating jobs and productive activities with economic return for individuals, families and communities.

Among those initiatives were Qatar’s funding of several development projects to provide decent work, totalling more than $600m, which benefited 85 countries worldwide. Inside Qatar, the Minister appreciated the expatriate workers’ vital roles  in building the Qatari infrastructure and achieving sustainable development, stressing the State of Qatar’s relentless efforts to provide them with basic services, including legal protection, health services, education, social welfare, and other services, without discrimination.

Hailing the efforts made by world countries to confront the post-COVID-19 pandemic social crises, the Minister called for a quick and immediate response to the disasters that are hitting the world today, in order to achieve sustainable development and bridge the gaps due to economic pressures on societies.  The agenda of the high-profile ministerial forum focused on ways of global integration for the full implementation of the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, by focusing on setting the main steps for the international community to overcome inequality to accelerate recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic effects.
