ISTANBUL:  Iran’s supreme leader on Wednesday denounced U.S. foreign policy vis-à-vis his country, describing "certain U.S. politicians” as "idiots”.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei recalled that some U.S. politicians had said that Iran’s revolutionary government would last for only six months after the country’s 1979 revolution.

He also took aim at John Bolton, a notorious "neoconservative” who currently serves as U.S. President Donald Trump’s national security adviser.

At a Paris conference in 2017, Bolton met with leaders of the People's Mujahedin of Iran (MEK), an Iranian armed opposition group that Tehran considers a terrorist organization.

At the conference, Bolton had voiced his hope of "celebrating the New Year of 2019 in Tehran” following the sought-for overthrow of the Iranian regime.

In reference to that Paris meeting, Khamenei asserted: "At a meeting with terrorists [the MEK], an American politician [Bolton] said he hoped to ring in the New Year in Tehran -- but this has obviously failed to materialize.”

"Some U.S. politicians like to pretend that they’re crazy,” he added. "But they’re not crazy -- they’re just first-rate idiots.”
