DOHA: In a rare verdict, a plenary court has ordered a leading hospital here to pay compensation worth QR200,000 to the dependants of a man who died of medical complications following a weight loss surgery conducted at the hospital.
The hospital, penalized for medical error is also obliged to pay the court expenses to the victim’s relatives.
The court, however, rejected the plea of the dependants seeking compensation from another hospital that refused to admit the patient in its Intensive Care Unit after his situation worsened.
The law suit was filed against two famous hospitals to pay compensation worth a total of QR100m along with court expenses. The petitioners demanded establishment of a committee of medical experts to review the medical reports of the victim and the cause of his death, Al Sharq reported.
The victim had been suffering from obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and sleep apnea. After the weight loss surgery, he developed heart and kidney problems and a severe infection in the wound because the hospital didn’t take the necessary precautions during and after the surgery.
The victim was transferred to another hospital, but it refused to admit him in its Intensive Care Unit since it had no specialist consultants and failed to give him the required medicines, accused the petitioners.
The victim died after his condition deteriorated. The surgery was assessed as a total failure leading to the victim’s death.
