HBKU Student Theater Club presents famous puppet play in English for first time

Doha: On the occasion of Eid Al Fitr, the Student Theater Club with Student Affairs at Hamad Bin Khalifa University(HBKU) presented a performance of the children’s puppet play ‘Bushra and the Sea,’  over two days. 

The play was presented in cooperation with the Department of Theater Affairs at the Ministry of Culture (MoC), at Minaretein (formerly the College of Islamic Studies Building) in Education City. 

Bushra and the Sea has consistently entertained Arabic speaking audiences and has been an incredibly popular show. 

“Bushra and the Sea, is being presented as part of activities of the Student Theater Club at HBKU. Our students have coordinated with the Ministry of Culture and presenting it to the Qatar Foundation community and public.  

“The play was previously performed in Arabic only, but for the first time it is being showed in English as well as a  gesture to reach all segments of students in Education City and the community,” Faisal Al Mohannadi, Senior Student Engagement Supervisor, HBKU told The Peninsula.

Al Mohannadi also said that the play is presented with the support of technology and it complements the education programs at HBKU. He also emphasized that taking the culture of theater and art towards the future is based on technology and innovation.

Student Theater Club, President, Wohaib Khalid, “We are presenting this play as part of extracurricular activities. We have been able to present it in both English and Arabic and it is presented with the support of 3 D green screen technology.” 

‘Bushra and the Sea’ is based on s story where a wise and gentle king sends his three children on a quest to discover which of them will rule his kingdom best upon his departure.   “We are delighted to be performing one of our productions today in this beautiful venue at Qatar Foundation. With thanks to HBKU, the organisers and hosts of our show and the support of the Theatre Affairs Centre under the Ministry of Culture,” said Reem Behzad,  Artistic Director, Puppet Space, Creator, writer, designer & co-director of Bushra and the Sea.

We are very proud of this show which was supported by the ministry of culture. Their support enabled “us to collaborate with our talented, long time puppeteers and colleagues in Edinburgh Kim Bergsagel and Symon Macintyre from Vision Mechanics, who helped us to develop the script, direct the first version of the show and build it all with great expertise,” she added.
