Doha: After going down in the semi-finals, Qatar’s World No.1 beach volleyball pair of Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan are hoping to conclude their Tokyo Olympics campaign with a bronze medal.
The duo will take on Martins Plavins and Edgars Tocs of Latvia for third place play-off today.
The Qatari side fell to reigning world champions Viacheslav Krasilnikov and Oleg Stoyanovskiy of Russian Olympic Committee in the semi-finals.
Plavins and Tocs lost to Anders Mol and Christian Sorum of Norway in the semi-finals.
Today’s match against the Latvians, who have shown outstanding performance in Tokyo so far, will be another tough challenge for Qatar’s Cherif and Tijan.
On their way to semi-finals, Plavins and Tocs, eliminated none other than the team of defending Olympic champion Alison Cerutti and his Brazilian partner Alvaro Filho.
A win today will ensure Qatar’s third medal at the ongoing Olympics after Fares Ibrahim and Mutaz Essa Barshim clinched gold medals for the country. Ibrahim won the 96kg category weightlifting event while Barshim shared high jump gold with his Italian friend Gianmarco Tamberi.
