Eating nuts, especially walnut, has a beneficial effect on the structure of intestinal bacteria, according to a recent American medical study.
The new study conducted at the University of Illinois in the state of Chicago said that the way the walnut affects the intestinal microbes, may have some health benefits.
Eating walnuts not only affected the microbes of the intestine and secondary acids derived from microbes, but it affected the reduction of LDL-cholesterol levels in the adults participating in the study, which is good news for cardio, metabolic, and gastrointestinal health, according to the results of the study published in the Journal of Nutrition.
Professor in the Department of Food Science at the University of Illinois, Hannah Holscher said: "We found that when you consume walnuts it increases microbes that produce butyrate, a beneficial metabolite for colonic health. So the interaction of walnuts with the microbiome is helping to produce some of those health effects."
Previous studies have also shown that eating walnuts helps prevent cardiovascular disease and lower cholesterol levels in the long term, because it contains a high proportion of omega-3 and vitamin E. (QNA)
