Doha: Qatar Charity (QC) has launched ‘Mushaf Bassira’ campaign to distribute 2,000 copies of the Holy Quran to visually impaired people in Indonesia.
The inauguration was held in Filmang city on Sumatra Island under the auspices of Qatari Ambassador Mohammed Al Khater and in the presence of the governor and other important figures.
Dr Said Agil Husin Al Munawar, former minister of endowment and religious affairs, attended the ceremony and expressed appreciation and gratitude to Al Khater and QC.
“The initiative is added to a long list of projects QC is implementing in our country,” he said.
Al Khater said: “The project is special because it offers a sacred service. Helping the visually impaired by giving them copies of ‘Mushaf Bassira’ to assist them in reading and memorising the Quran, is a precious deed. I thank QC for efforts in Indonesia.”
Karam Zeinhom, Country Director, QC, said, “The copies of the Holy Quran ‘Mushaf Bassira’ will serve visually impaired in Jakarta and seven other cities on four islands.”
Mushaf Bassira aims to provide a manual in Braille. Users can select the surah (chapter) they wish to listen to and rewind verses they want.
It also allows a user to listen to the explanation of verses which means they can listen to the recitation of the Quran, memorise it and learn its meaning.
In cooperation with a Malaysian company, QC printed Mushaf Bassira. There are over 7,000,000 visually impaired people in the Arab world and most cannot afford a copy of the Quran in Braille; it is expensive and very big.
The copy has a list of all surahs in Braille with an electronic pen with a sound system. The visually impaired can use it to listen to Quran reciters, learn the meaning of words, know occasions and circumstances of revelation, control sound, easily find surahs and verses and listen to invocations.
As part of its interest in teaching Quran and its sciences, QC implemented ‘Bait Al Quran’ (The House of the Quran) project at a cost of QR1.5m by the end of last year, benefiting over 350 students.
The project is a school consisting of six classes, a mosque, laboratories, a library, a water well, eight bathrooms, dorms for teachers and students and two stores.
QC is helping improve the educational field so that it would be effectively used. Until last year, it established some 15 centres to offer services in cities.
It built 16 schools which benefit 53,000 citizens, 496 mosques that serve 25,000 people and printed and distributed copies of the Holy Quran to almost 150,000 people.
