Doha: Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) is taking part in the Fifth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5), which starts today at Qatar National Convention Center (QNCC).
Under the slogan “From Potential to Prosperity”, the event will last until March 9, with high-level attendance including world leaders, the private sector, civil society, parliamentarians, and young people.
QRCS and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) have a joint booth at the sideline exhibition, among other local and international exhibitors.
On Day 2, both QRCS and IFRC will be moderating a panel discussion titled “Locally-led Action is Key”.
Commenting on the occasion, QRCS Secretary-General, Ali bin Hassan Al Hamadi, said, “By being part of this conference, QRCS seeks to further pursue its effective humanitarian role as Qatar’s representative in the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. This international event, hosted by Qatar, is considered an opportunity to share our future vision of the ways to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the best interest of the less fortunate nations, as well as how to help them to overcome their challenges, towards development, stability, and better living conditions”.
Al Hamadi noted that the advancement of vulnerable communities, including the least developed countries, is a strategic priority of QRCS’s work. Over the past seven years, QRCS carried out diverse relief and development projects in 57 countries affected by natural disasters and/or armed conflicts, including major least developed countries such as Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Yemen, Sudan, Mauritania, and Somalia.
He added, “The total number of beneficiaries from QRCS’s services and aid since 2016 is 62 million, with a total value of QR3.26bn. QRCS conducts its international operations through 14 foreign representation offices/missions, as well as numerous partnership agreements with sister national societies, local authorities, and international humanitarian organisations in the host countries.
“Locally, QRCS boasts some 27,000 volunteers, highly trained and qualified to carry out various relief and social assignments. All these achievements and resources demonstrate the community’s fundraising ability for the benefit of vulnerable people everywhere, as well as its ability to integrate young talent into Qatar’s humanitarian sector.”
