Sri Lankan community in Qatar yesterday celebrated their country’s 71st Independence Day with traditional zeal and fervour.
Many Sri Lankans turned up at the embassy in the Old Airport area for a flag-hoisting ceremony. ASP Liyanage, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Qatar, hoisted the national flag as the national anthem was sung.
A two-minute silence was observed in remembrance and honour of freedom fighters. Also, religious observances were performed.
The messages of Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesighe and Foreign Minister Tilak Marapana, were read out. Ambassador Liyanage lauded the harmony among all Sri Lankan expatriates living here.
