Stage set for National Sport Day

DOHA: Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC), the country’s governing sport body is preparing to celebrate a unique and exceptional event, the National Sport Day (NSD) from February 6 until the official celebrations on February 11, amid highly expected participation from the government and non-government organisations, sport federations, clubs, centers, companies, community individuals from across the country.
QOC has announced that its NSD celebration will get underway from February 6 until February 11 ( lasting for one week) at the QOC Sport Zone, where multiple sport activities and programs are dully prepared for all age groups including, men, women, youth and children.
In a pre-event release, Mishal Al Khalifa, the QOC Assistant Secretary General for Administrative Support confirmed that the nature of the celebrations this year will be distinctive, unique and exceptional, starting one week prior the official celebrations at the QOC Sport Zone.
The Assistant Secretary General for Administrative Support also outlined that the NSD website ( www.sportday.qa) is ready to provide a comprehensive coverage for all sport events, activities, programmes and stories, photos from across the country, as well as it will provide all the participants with a road map to help their access to all locations of the events.
“Qatar Olympic Committee is always keen to arrange highly world class sport facilities for the community sport in ambitious effort to encourage the participation of individuals and families in the sport which is a significant tool to improve life and health for all ” said Al Khalifa.
Likewise, Sheikh Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al Thani, the Official-in-charge of Media Relations at the QOC confirmed that the NSD will feature exceptional sport programs and activities, where QOC will organise the Traditional Shawaheef Rowing Championship on the occasion of the Country’s National Sport Day scheduled for February 11 on Doha Corninche.
“The QR4m prize money event will bring together around 10 teams, comprising elite rowing sporting amateurs and pioneers who will compete for a three kilometers distance on the sea” said Sheikh Hamad.
Sheikh Hamad also explained that “Be Fit” Campaign organised by the Qatar Olympic Committee in cooperation with the VLCC Center reflected a much higher participation rate that the previous edition. 775 persons of both genders took part in the program last year.
“The campaign was successful in view of its objective of encouraging participants to positively change in their lifestyle, in a way to keep up with healthy behaviors for the rest of their life, then to contribute to raising awareness about healthy lifestyle in their family and community environment” said Sheikh Hamad. 
National Sport Day’s first edition kicked off in February 2012 pursuant to the supreme Emiri Decree No. 80 for the year 2011 on December 6, 2011, concerning the State’s National Sport Day. 
The Decree states that Tuesday in the second week of February each year will be the State’s National Sports Day.
A public and unprecedented participation in this year’s National Sport Day is expected from both governments and non-government departments, companies, agencies, community individuals, visitors and guests, believing in the important role played by the sport for mental and physical health.
