DOHA: Graduating artists and designers from Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar (VCUQatar) will showcase works that comprised their individual theses at a special exhibition and reception today at VCUQatar’s Gallery and in Room 390 at VCUQatar.
Entry is free. The BFA exhibition is open until May 21 for the MFA exhibition until May 28. Visitors can discover Qatar’s emerging talent in the fields of graphics, interior and fashion design, painting and printmaking and art history. It showcases the works of graduates from VCUQatar’s Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree (BFA) and Master of Fine Arts Degree (MFA) programmes.
The works of the graduates of the Interior Design programme range from design solutions for multiple needs to housing solutions for migrant workers, and sustainability initiatives, ethical approaches to interior designs, traditional and holistic designs, and an avant-garde design for simulation spaces which would mimic the isolation and conditions of living in colonies on Mars.
The works of graduates of the Graphic Design programme include studies mapping the mathematical motion of stars, on the potential shortcomings of urban civilization, on gender stereotypes, and on recreating Qatar’s forgotten architectural identity through visual languages. Other graduates have focused on how to visualize the powerful sense of smell or how light and its influence on prayer times can affect a design. Works by the graduates of the Fashion Design program will also be on display at the BFA & MFA Exhibition.
The exhibition provides an opportunity to discover the works of a new generation of art and design talent in Qatar who are incorporating local, regional and international ideas in creative ways.
